 YOUTH LEADERSHIP GENESEE

Leadership That Makes a Difference!

Application due 02-04-2010

 Program Overview

The mission of Resource Genesee’s Youth Leadership Genesee Program (YLG) is to prepare a diverse group of high school students for constructive leadership and committed involvement in the future of their community.

Students will be selected from each of Genesee County’s high schools and other youth organizations to participate in high-level service learning and civic engagement projects. YLG sessions will include:
  • Experiential and interactive learning
  • Discussions related to community issues
  • Interaction with community leaders
  • Development of communication and leadership skills
  • Orientation to organizations in the community
  • Motivation for participants to become more actively involved in community service

The four areas of focus for the YLG program are:

  • Self: Understanding how to lead must begin with an understanding of one’s self: strengths, challenges, values, and life’s purpose.
  • Others: Successful leadership involves engaging in relationships with others, communicating clearly, providing support, and creating environments that foster the best in people.
  • Action: Leadership is about movement and direction, stimulating action and change.
  • Community: Leaders promote change or action within the communities and organizations in their sphere of influence, understanding the unique values and climate of each community.

Selection Criteria

Application to YOUTHLEADERSHIP GENESEE PROGRAM is open to all high school students in Genesee County.

The class is generally limited to 60 participants who will be selected by the YOUTH LEADERSHIP GENESEE Program Coordinators. The Program Coordinators will be seeking participation from students representing various schools and organizations and varied ethnic, minority, age, and gender groups, to represent a cross-section of the community. Participants should be willing to participate in service-learning projects, discussions, and lessons about personal and group leadership.

The most important factor in selection is identifying those individuals most apt to utilize their leadership for the long-term benefit of the community. In reviewing applications, the Program Coordinators look for candidates who demonstrate the following characteristics:

A sincere commitment, motivation and interest to learn about leadership.
Genuine concern for the future of Genesee County and the region.
Have been identified as showing leadership potential by an adult that knows them.
Willingness and ability to make the time commitment required by the program.
The intention of using what they learn to lead others in making a difference.
